Dog Facts That Will Make You Say Bow WOW!

It’s National Dog Week and what better way to celebrate your canine friend than to learn some interesting facts that will make you say ‘bow WOW!’ This week is brought to us by Captain William Judy, writer and WWI veteran. He dedicated his life after the war to improving conditions for dogs and educating dog owners on the proper way to care for dogs depending on their breed.

As we show a little more appreciation towards our best fur-iends this week, here are 10 dog facts that show just how amazing our canine friends truly are.

Did You Know …

  1. A dog’s nose print is unique, much like a person’s fingerprint.

  2. Forty-five percent of U.S. dogs sleep in their owner’s bed.

  3. Dogs curl up in a ball when sleeping to protect their organs—something they have kept from their days in the wild, when they were vulnerable to predator attacks.

  4. Dogs have 18 muscles to move their ears.

  5. Your dog is as smart as a two-year-old! Ever wonder why children around this age seem to have a special bond with the family dog? It could be because they speak the same language, roughly 250 words.

  6. When your dog is carefully choosing the perfect place to do his business, it’s because they prefer to go poop in alignment with the Earth’s magnetic field.

  7. A Greyhound would actually beat a cheetah in a long distance race! Greyhounds are excellent long distance runners and can keep a speed of 35 mph for up to 7 miles. The cheetah is incredibly fast, but it can only keep its speed for around 200 -300 yards. While cheetahs may have the running start, the Greyhound can surpass them thanks to their long distance endurance.

  8. Dogs can sniff at the same time they are breathing! Their noses are designed so smells can stay in their nose while air can move in and out of their lungs at the same time, which means they can breathe freely and still work out what that smell is.

  9. Their whiskers work as a compass. Whiskers help them navigate their environment by determining the size of objects around them, even in the dark!

  10. Dogs have three eyelids! The third eyelid is called the ‘haw’ and is used to keep the eye lubricated.

While you add in some extra appreciation and love for National Dog Week to your best four-legged friend, encourage yourself as a pet parent to learn more about your dog too. In the words of Captain William Judy, ‘Don’t call a man a dog - it’s unfair to the dog.’
