Spring Cleaning Tips For Organizing Your Pet Supplies

It’s time to break out our cleaning mindset and traverse our houses to throw away the old and get ready for a spring mentality. It’s no secret that spring typically brings with it the urge to purge and do some spring cleaning around the house, including our pets' items and spaces. While it can be overwhelming to figure out how to store things and where things make the most sense, we’ve gathered 6 organizational tips to help you out this spring cleaning season.

Tip #1: Store items where they will be used or in one centralized place. A leash makes more sense hanging in a mudroom or by a frequently used door while food bins should be by food and water bowls. Instead of having everything in different areas of the house, think about putting their walking necessities by the door and keeping all of their food, treats and medicines in the kitchen. It helps to have a centralized area for everything or several centralized areas with specific necessities to make it easier to find the things you need before walking out the door or feeding them dinner.

Tip #2: Baskets and bins are pretty great for storing your pet’s items. Easy access and independent playtime are just some benefits your dog can get from having bins or baskets as toy storage. Storage bags, jars or wipable/washable bins can be good for storing food, treats, kibble or medicine. If you have limited space, stackable bins are a good option!

Tip #3: Rotate your toy bins. Keeping your pets toys in a simple storage bin is a great way to keep items contained instead of lying around on the floor. To keep things a little more tidy, you can implement a toy rotation system, especially if your pet has a big collection of toys. Use small bins to store toys and rotate them weekly to help keep your pet’s interest piqued during playtime and to prevent toy overload in your living space.

Tip #4: Label, label, label! Some organizers may seem obvious as to what is inside, such as a toy basket, and won’t need a label but closed boxes, bins or storage containers may need reminders on what is inside of them. Having visibly labeled bins helps to create a fool-proof system for anyone in the house to easily find and put items away. Try to stick with more broad categories when labeling, such as ‘walking necessities’ or ‘grooming needs’ instead of super specific labels. This will ensure that your system lasts as your pet’s needs change.

Tip #5: Create a pet grooming station. To help organize your pet grooming supplies, create a dedicated pet grooming station with caddies to store shampoos, brushes, nail clippers and other tools. A portable caddy with compartments makes it readily available for you to grab frequently used items on the move. You can designate a space in your bathroom or mudroom to store supplies that may not be used as frequently. Keep pet-only towels in a basket or bin near your designated grooming area.

Tip #6: Utilize hanging storage. If you’re working with small spaces or just want to free up some floor and shelf space, there are many options for using hanging pet storage. Peel-and-stick hooks, decorative wall hooks, wall shelves and over the door organizers are all great options to implement practically anywhere in your home!

Don’t let spring cleaning become a daunting task when it comes to your pet! Utilizing bins, shelves and baskets can be helpful tools when it comes to pet supplies and finding the right places to store them. Creating a more organized environment for you and Fido can help to reduce the stress of finding the right items at the right time, leaving more time for belly rubs and playing fetch.
